Criminal makes 28 pounds profit but has to pay just 1 pound back..

Summary
Burly John Dreslin was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison last week and has to pay back one pound while he made 28 million pounds profit. This is because he squandered away all the money and has no assets, which stunned the people in the courtroom. It was said that if Mr Dreslin or any of the other gang members were to come into any money or collect any assets the police would be able to track them.

Reaction
I completely understand why people are angry that drug dealer Dreslin got away with paying just one pound while he made 2.6 million pounds profit. I agree with Emma Boon that if criminals are not able to pay back what they owe they should increase the sentence. Dreslin is sentenced to eight and a half years in jail, I think they should double it and make him work to pay.

Snakes will be snakes..

Summary
47 year old Luke Yeomans had been breeding king cobra’s to save them from extinction for 30 years when he was bitten by one and died. Luke had dedicated his whole life to saving the snakes and he had a huge collection at home in a sanctuary. He was convinced the snakes would never turn on him because they knew he would do them no harm. Unfortunately one of the snakes decided otherwise. The paramedics believed he suffered from a heart attack.

Reaction
This is a sad story, I think he was doing a good thing by breeding this snakes to prevent extinction. But I think it is really naive to think that the snakes are not going to harm you because they know you feed them and take care of them. They’re predators and they do not turn into pets because you treat them nice. That is just not their nature.  And when you have spent 30 years of your life learning about these creatures you should know better. But maybe because in all those years he was never harmed he started to believe the snakes would never turn on him.

No more smoking in the streets?

Summary
Stony Stratford may be the first town where smoking in the street will be prohibited. Next month the Stony Stratford town council will discuss a motion to pass the ban. Anti smoking organisations and the British Medical Association are in favour of this idea. But there are also a lot of people against it saying that after the current smoking ban business has suffered and that this will probably make it worse. People might choose not to go out anymore because of this ban.
Reaction
I do understand how annoying it is to stand next to a smoker when you do not smoke yourself. Because of the passive smoking and the smell is awful. But I think if you ban smoking in the streets it would indeed be bad for business. Maybe they should make areas where you are allowed to smoke as some sort of compromise. Although the risk is that you get large groups of people gathered in one place which might cause the next irritation.

Little Britain is evil!

Summary
Peter Dixon lied about not being able to walk to receive 7,600 pounds. He said he needed a wheelchair and fooled the doctors together with his carer Rachel Langlands.  In 2005 Mr. Dixon had a stroke and was left with serious health difficulties. But when his health improved after a couple of years he did not notify the authorities, neither did his carer so that they would keep receiving disability living allowance and carer’s allowance.
Reaction
Little Britain is clearly a bad influence. Therefore this program should be banned, all dvds should be burned and no one should be allowed to ever talk about this program ever again. From now on we ‘will call it “the program that must not be named”.

Old couple left alone for three days by social service carers

Summary
Kenneth Mills, an 82 year old pensioner died in his wheelchair while his feeble wife lying helplessly on the floor besides him. This happened because social service carers did not call in on the couple for three days. Mr. Mills had Parkinson and his wife was in such poor health that she could not take care of him. They had a care package which meant that the couple was supposed to be visited several times a day. On the 24th of September they were meant to leave home for respite care but the couple refused, therefore their sons had asked to restore the previous care package previously in place. But that did not happen because of the overload of phone calls social services received.

Reaction
I feel so sorry for the family, especially the wife who saw her husband die but could not do anything. How horrible that must have been. Of course this did not happen on purpose but I do feel social services are responsible for the trauma they have caused on the wife and her sons. This should not have happened and I think the social service carers should have made sure the previous arrangements would continue since the couple refused to go with them for respite care.

Police officer fired

Summary
A 35 year old police officer has been fired because he posted offensive messages about a colleague on Facebook. He also harassed a female co-worker with whom he had a very short and casual with. The Crown Prosecution Service decided there would be no criminal charges. The case went before a Metropolitan police gross misconduct hearing. There it was decided that the men did not belong in the police service.
Reaction
I think the police officer behaved himself very childish and unprofessional. And I agree that this man does not belong in the police service, I wonder if he is able to understand this? The relationship with the co-worker was described as brief and casual so I wonder why this police officer kept harassing this woman. “He sent the woman a series of abusive text messages and subjected her to verbal abuse and threats”. This goes a bit far if the relationship was brief and casual. Well of course this behavior always goes too far but I mean it sounds like the man really over reacted.

Prison because of chat conversations

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3641586/Facebook-juror-is-jailed-for-8-months.html

Summary
Joanne Frail a mum of three children has to spend eight months in jail because she contacted Jamie Stewart, a defendant. Joanne served as a juror at a drug trial concerning 6 million pounds. At the time Joanne contacted Jamie, she had been aquitted but the other defendants were still on trial. Jamie told her solliciter about the chat conversations she had had with Joanne and Joanne was being sent to prison.

Reaction
Well I do not think it is a very smart thing to do, contacting a defendant when you are a juror on a trial. And I do not really understand what the purpose of this was other than to show sympathy. From what I read in the article she did not take it very serious anyway since she says that she had been doodling on her notepad to kill time. I also think it is very low of Jamie to participate in these messages and say to Joanne that she deleted them all and then turn her in anyway.

Swords and bodybags..

Summary
Two men from Manchester have been arrested because they behaved suspiciously. This was near the house of Joss Stone in Cullompton, Devon . The pair was initially arrested because they were equipped to steal and because they had weapons on them. It is said that the men were carrying body bags and swords but this has not been confirmed by the police. The police have been granted extra time to question the two men.
Reaction
Seems to me that the story is made more sensational because it happened to happen near the house of Joss Stone. Nowhere in the article has it said the men where after her but when you read the headline you might think they were. I understand it is troublesome that these men were wandering around the neighbourhood while they were obviously up to something. But it has nothing to do with Joss Stone so why put her name in the headline?

An affair gone bad :P

Summary
Timothy Haynes, an insurance firm director has been involved in a long time affair with Leena Puddick. It started in 2002 and in 2009 her husband found out when he found a text message on her cell phone. Instead of confronting Mr Haynes he set up an internet campaign, build a website, posted videos, used twitter and wrote on blogs about the affair. In court he admitted to all of this and Mr Haynes complained about how he and his wife needed counselling after the harassment.
Reaction
Well I think this has gone way too far. I understand that Mr Puddick is angry with Mr Haynes but with this harassment he does not only make life difficult for Mr Haynes but also for his wife and children. What I found to be really strange is that Mr Haynes wife Anya is still with him and only talks about how difficult it was that the information had been posted online. She never talks about the affair or says that she is angry with her husband.

Popular schools are allowed to let in more pupils

Summary
There used to be restrictions for popular state schools to expand and take on more pupils however these restrictions will be lifted. This is to allow more pupils to go to their first choice of school. This will probably mean that financial problems will increase for less popular schools because the financial support a school gets is determined by the number of pupils they have. The Government suspects that local authorities sometimes put a stop to popular schools taking on more pupils because it would be harder to support weaker schools when they don’t have enough pupils.

Reaction
It seems like a good idea and I think it is fair that every pupil gets to go to the school of their choice. On the other hand I think schools should have the same standards and therefore there should not be a major difference between schools. “Good” schools should be available everywhere and for everyone.  If there are only a couple of good schools it would mean some students and teachers will have to travel further in the future. And I wonder if a bigger school would not create a less personal environment where students become numbers and there is less personal attention.

Teachers don’t want to be teachers anymore because of the high level of stress.

Summary:
Due to the increase of stress many teachers do not want to be teachers anymore. This high level of stress has developed because of the target demands made by the government, especially the enhancing of form-filling has driven up the amount of work.  Health and Safety Executive found that the teaching profession is the most stress full profession, 41.5% of the teachers say they are highly stressed. For a small group of teachers this is even a reason to think about suicide.

Reaction:
Obviously things are not going as they should go. The fact that there are teachers who are thinking about suicide makes it clear that this is a real problem and that it already has gone too far. I think we should cherish teachers because we and our children benefit from their education. Therefore I feel the government should take better care of them and find a solution for this increasing problem. Because if this goes on nobody wants to be a teacher anymore and then what?

Medics drop 73 year old woman into the Arctic Ocean!

Summary
Janet Richardson, a 73 old woman, was on a cruise ship with her husband when she was struck by an internal bleeding. The crew of the ship was worried about her health and called in a rescue boat that could take her to the hospital for further treatment. When they tried to get her on the rescue boat they let the stretcher slip and Janet fell into the freezing cold water. It took them 8 minutes before they got her out of the water and finally brought her to the hospital. She is now on the intensive care and the doctors have no idea when her condition will improve.

Reaction
A horrible experience for this poor old lady, her husband and the people who saw it happen. And I can imagine the rescuers feeling terrible about it. Of course they did not do this on purpose but the question is if they could have prevented this from happening. In the latter part of the article it is said that some precautions weren’t taken. They could have gone to the docks to let Janet go of the cruise ship but because they wanted to save time and money, it was decided to do the rescue on sea. I wonder why time and money are (in this case) more valuable than a human life..

Thief spared from prison because the judge feels sorry for his cat..

Summary:
A thief was spared from prison because the judge felt sorry for his cat. The lawyer of the defendant told the judge that there was no cat flap installed in his house and there was no one to feed the cat. The judge asked the defendant if he could kindly think of the cat a bit more before he went shoplifting again. And he let him go off with a 75 pound fine. Last year the judge let another defendant go off with a curfew so he would be able to attend a rock festival.
Reaction:
I think this is absolutely ridiculous; the whole justice system seems like a joke when you read this article. Anyone who is thinking about committing a crime will think “hell if I get caught I just come up with some lame excuse and the judge will let me go anyways”. I think that if the judge is concerned about the cat he could have send someone else to fetch it and put it in an animal shelter for the time being. And the costs would have to be paid for by the thug when he gets out of jail.

14 year old kills herself

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/girl-14-killed-herself-three-weeks-after-friends-suicide-537327.html
Summary;
A 14 year old girl, Jade, killed herself because she was depressed by the death of her friend Kirsty who killed herself three weeks before. It was her second attempt, on the night of the funeral Jade had tried to hang herself but failed. Some people think it was a suicide pact, given that Kirsty got depressed by the death of a friend of hers, who died after sniffing butane gas. Others say the girls were bullied.
Reaction:
Of course this is very sad. For the girls who felt so miserable that they decided to take their own lives. But also for the people they left behind, their family and friends. What I found a bit strange is that for both girls it seems like their happiness depended on just one person. Sure it is normal to miss a friend but they still have their other friends and their family. It seems like they meant nothing to them compared to that one friend. Or there was indeed more to it then just wanting to die because they lost someone.

European super grid

Summary:
The article is about a cable between the UK National Grid and the Dutch National Grid. Running from the Isle of Grain in Kent to Maasvlakte in Rotterdam and it's about 260 km long with a capacity of 1,000MW. This can be compared to the capacity of a nuclear power station.
The ten nations at the borders of the North Sea signed an agreement to build a European super grid, connecting the countries through cables to exchange energy. Renewable wind energy can be brought to countries where wind is not available and can be exported from the countries that have too much.
Comment:
I think it is a very good idea because it is very environment friendly and countries who want to use environment friendly energy but have not enough wind available are now given the change to use it too. The same goes for solar power and hydropower as is also mentioned in the article. In the article it is also mentioned that it is an advantage for consumers because a single European market puts pressure on the prices. Therefore I do not really see any disadvantages about this super grid.
